Happy Birthday, Mermaid!

One of my very best friend's birthday is today. She is one of the most caring and compassionate people I know. I met her in spring of 2008 in a LYS and she slowly made herself an integral part of my life.
She can find four leaf clovers anywhere we go.  She makes pumpkins into cartoon cars and yarn into monkeys.  She is an extroverted introvert.  She is my color consultant and she has great taste in food.  She is as steady as a rock and always ready to laugh.  I am very blessed to be her friend as she has brought so much joy to my life and into the lives of all the people with which she surrounds herself.

Sock and Sockibility

There was once a fine knitter who professed her undying love to a ball of sock yarn. She spoke to this yarn about future walks in the countryside and evenings spent in the parlor. Then she wrapped the brightly colored wool around her needles with unbridled passion.

However as the days passed the folly of this entanglement led to disquiet while obligation required her continuation of the engagement.

This same knitter, in months past, had promised a close friend that upon the latter quitting the foul habit of smoking tobacco that the former would decree to consent to produce varicolored socks for the latter. A missive came that the friend was now free from the odious weed and so the knitter took up another set of needles and sock yarn of more muted tones for her friend.

Blue and Brown sock

While in full knowledge that these socks being intended for another, she could not fail to see in the new sock all the amiable and irristible qualities that she could not find in her own attachment. She lamented to her dearest companion, whom she could share her deepest secrets, about all her woes.

The dearest companion, who is wise and knowledgable in all affairs of this nature, said without a moments hesitation,

"Just give your friend those rainbow socks and you keep the brown and blue ones that you like better. She won't know the difference, she likes bright colors anyway and you will be happy."

The knitter, in submitting to the new attachment could only hold her bosom buddy in the highest regard and esteem. She will forever be in the debt of this mentor and will owe her fresh bread and home churned butter all the days of her life...

Or maybe not.

Zero to Sixty

If you look at my Ravelry page or this blog, you would think I have been lazy all month.  Nothing would be farther from the truth.  I have been enjoying the warm weather, good friends and lots of family time.

This is not to say I haven't gotten any knitting done.  I just have nothing finished to show for it.  The photos of me knitting at MDSW have the same sock that is now in my purse.  I have had to frog it back 3 times due to gauge/ measurement issues and I just cast off the FIRST sock.

I am on my third colorwork fingerless mitt because the first one is much bigger then the second and cannot be called a pair. It is my own fault for switching needles. The needles were the same size but different materials.  It obviously made a difference.

On a side note, I love my Blackthorn Needles.

Also on needles, I have a bulky blanket that will never end, a cotton baby blanket and a colorwork Christmas stocking.

On top of all this, I am going to attempt to do a 5K stash dash that is going on over at the Knit Girllls Ravelry group. This means you try to knit up 5 kilometers of yarn before 8/15/2011. WIPs count as log as you cast off during stash dash.  The above projects make up only 4,748 yards when I finish them and so I will need to add around 1,000 yards to make the 5K.

I should be able to get my socks and fingerless mitts done in the next week. Wish me luck!
